04/01/2016: Well, I don't quite know what to make of the 2016 SupeRugby format.
The powers that be have either fixed it or broken it beyond repair...time will tell.
Three additional teams have been added to last years lineup and yet fewer matches will be played by each side.
Four conferences now split into two groups. The Australasian group contains the original 10 teams from NZL & AUS whilst
the South African group comprises 8 teams - 3 x SAF + Argentina and 3 x SAF + Japan. This gives the draw an asymmetric
look - some teams are playing each other home and away, whilst other teams won't play each other at all. Each team plays 6
fixtures against other teams in their same local conference. For NZL and AUS sides, this means playing every other team
once and then two of them twice? It's all just a bit odd!
On the face of it, the competition now seems to be weighted in South Africa's favour: two SAF teams are virtually guaranteed
home play-offs, although whether this helps them (or their International game) in the long run, remains to be seen.
But the thing I really don't like about the 2016 format is that in a given year, conferences from different countries are
no longer playing each other at all! SupeRugby has been heading this way for a few years now but I think they've gone
too far. In the (what should be!) round-robin phase, teams in Conference 3 (SAF1) won't play any NZL teams this year and
Conference 4 (SAF2) won't play any AUS teams.
This used to be the premier regional competition in World rugby because the winning side had the best record against the top
teams from the other countries.
Will the 2016 champions be able to say the same?
